It’s officially December, which means it is now socially acceptable to discuss Christmas (even if we’ve been talking about it since mid November…)
December must be a child’s favourite month of the year, with Christmas round the corner, school nativities and Christmas parties to attend as well as those two glorious school-free weeks around the big day itself!
But we know it can get a bit hectic in December so we’ve compiled a handy list you can use to plan your Christmas when kids are in the mix.
LetsXcape Together Board Games and Events Café
LetsXcape Together is located in the Buttermarket in Newark town centre, and is the perfect place to take kids who love a board game adventure. With 100s of titles to choose from, including classic games, roleplaying adventure games and even military strategy games, you are sure to find something for everyone to enjoy.
Why not spend a gloomy December day or two with friends and family, laughing, bonding and having fun with a bite to eat and drink over a good board game?
The National Civil War Centre is incredibly family friendly and is a brilliant place to take kids during the month of December. For those that are a little younger they can take part in one of the exciting trails around the museum and for those that are older they can have fun exploring the interactive displays dotted around the exhibitions. Also don’t forget to explore the new exciting exhibitions: World Turned Upside Down and Fake News.
And to really get into the festive mood, take part in their Old Father Christmas Trail from the 21st December, where you can make a spectacular Santa decoration!
Of course what is Christmas without a brilliant pantomime?! This year the Palace Theatre, Newark is bringing to life the slapstick comedy Sleeping Beauty. Starring Coronation Street’s Nick Cochrane as King Hugo, this spectacular show is full of sparkling costumes and bags of panto magic. There are still some tickets available, so book quickly to avoid disappointment!
Rufford Abbey is an ideal place to explore during the month of December, there is nothing more satisfying then wondering around a beautiful country park wrapped up in coats and scarves. It’s also excellent for children as they’ve got acres to safely run around, as well as Rufford Abbey’s amazing adventure play area where they can let their imagination run wild
Additionally, with their exciting Christmas events you can get up to loads of festive fun. Explore the Abbey grounds with their Reindeer Rescue Christmas Trail and treat the kids to a breakfast like never before with their Breakfast with Father Christmas event! Or if you’d prefer an evening meal you could have a Fish and Chip Supper with Santa instead. They also have their fabulous Christmas Grotto, every weekend, where you can visit the main man himself.
Much like Rufford Abbey, Thoresby is a brilliant place to let your kids create memories amongst nature – crafting their own adventures from the wildlife around them. For those that are perhaps a little older or have a little bit more energy you can always hire bikes and explore the Park that way.
Thoresby are also turning festive this December with their 12 doors of Christmas trail which begins on the 7th December and their Aladdin pantomime that kicks off on the 22nd December.
RSPB Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre
Explore the home of Robin Hood this December with your little ones and begin your own legendary adventure in the ancient woodlands. Pretend to be a band of mischievous outlaws who rob from the rich to give to the poor and make the Sheriff of Nottingham’s life a nightmare!
Also, every weekend in December, the Visitor Centre have an exciting non-traditional, medieval event you can get involved in from their St Nicholas Weekend to their Winter Solstice celebration. You can also explore the Forest like never before with their Christmas Trail that will wind its way through the magnificent winter woodland and every Sunday they will have an Advent event where they will light an Advent candle with the Sheriff of Nottingham himself
Have some adrenaline junkies on your hands? Well Sherwood Pines is the perfect place to let off some steam during the month of December. With their mountain bikes trails and the opportunity to be amongst the tops of the trees with Go Ape, it’s the perfect place to spend a day or two exploring the outdoors with your loved ones!
Remember to check out our Christmas page for a full run down of all the festive events you could take part in this month!
