    Description

Explore the impressive 'Guardian of the Trent' where King John famously took his last breath...

Standing proudly on the banks of the River Trent, Newark Castle has weathered many historic storms since it was built nearly 900 years ago and is famously the site where 'bad King John took his last breath.

Although partially destroyed during the Civil War, the remains still boast the largest gateway of any Castle in England and enough of the impressive structure still stands for visitors to fully appreciate its worthy nickname of 'Guardian of the Trent'.

Today, visitors can find out about the rich history of the site at their leisure thanks to the many information panels. Alternatively, take advantage of a guided tour of the Castle's towers and dungeons.

The remaining walls of the Castle surround the beautifully restored, award-winning, Victorian gardens - making it the ideal location to take a walk white enjoying picturesque views along the river.

A number of special events are also held throughout the year including: living history reenactments, summer brass band concerts and outdoor theatre productions.
